Burgess Hill 0 WTFC 1 - 16.08.09

Posted by Per Laleng on Wednesday, December 2, 2009, In : Archived match report

It was a scorcher of a day at Burgess Hill, and the crowd of 300 plus particularly enjoyed the pre-game spectacle of the Town Crier announcing the game on the pitch. The Head to Head suggested this would be a close game despite Burgess Hill's decent pre-season record. Both teams started pretty brightly. Gary Sayer showed a willingness to drive forward from the left back position whilst at the same time having to mark the biggest No.7 I have ever seen in the shape of Cotton. He created a goo...

WTFC 1 Folkestone Invicta 1 - 23.09.08

Posted by Per Laleng on Wednesday, December 2, 2009, In : Archived match report

I went to The Belmont on a one-man protest: by not taking my camera and deciding instead to make use of my season ticket from the stands. Maybe this is the way forward because Whitstable played really well for the first time this season. I gather some words were had after the Eastbourne game, and whatver was said seemed to have had the desired result!

There is very little to add to what has already been said about the game. In the first half, Whistable was in complete control against a team...

WTFC 2 Eastbourne 3 - 29.01.09

W v Eastb_052.JPG

Whitstable suffered a heartbreaking lesson tonight in the art of concentrating until the final whistle, squandering a deserved lead to two late goals at thekrbs-Belmont. This was a game where they deserved at least a share of the points outplaying the visitors for much of the game. This was some improvement compared with the 3-0 drubbing suffered earlier in the summer. Alas, despite two great goals from captain Liam Quinn - who continues to lead by example - defensive frailties let the team d...

Players' presentation night - 10.05.08

This took place at the Marine last night and was good fun. Woke up with a cracking hangover although I can't remember drinking that much. I assume it was too much sun ...

Bruce got a standing ovation from the room to recognise all the hard work he has put into the club over the years and it was well deserved. The best news of all is that there will now be an annual fixture known as the Bruce Smith shield between Whitstable and, yes, you guessed it, Herne Bay. This year's fixture is on 5th Au...

Met Police 4 WTFC 1 - 12.10.08

Met Pol v W_004.JPG
Hello hello hello?

It was a beautiful day at the Met Police ground which, as steveparsons has already noted, is probably the best ground in our division. And for the first 5-6 minutes looked like we might cause an upset. Apart from a recent win in a cup, Met Police really had failed to flatter in recent games, and during the opening exchanges, they looked all over the place. Whitstable looked in control. But a disallowed goal in the fourth minute from the Met was an inauspicious sign. The goa...

WTFC 0 Met Police 3 - 15.12.07

Posted by Per Laleng on Sunday, November 1, 2009, In : Archived match report

Seags put himself on the bench, but clearly felt the cause was hopeless!

The Manager had called for a performance from the team that proved that they had moved on from the Kent League, especially after recent decent displays against tough opposition. Unfortunately, the team didn't really respond to that call. True, the Oystermen remain beset by injuries but more significantly, they were missing GS at right back and the skipper in the midfield through suspension. And boy were they missed!

WTFC 1 Worthing 2 - 22.11.08

W v Worth_072

Despite the freezing conditions, or perhaps because of them, this was on the whole a good game of football. The impartial observer would also probably agree that Whitstable were unlucky not to get anything out of the game after Worthing scored from the spot in the dying minutes of injury time. But had Jake Gess scored from the spot in the 10th minute on his 100th appearance for the club, the final result may have gone the other way completely. It has been suggested elsewhere that the penalt...

WTFC 3 Whyteleafe 2 - 14.10.08

W v Whyte_045.JPG

Whether by accident or design, Rob Thomas was the only change to this Whitstable  side which ultimately out-played a fancied Whyteleafe side visiting The Belmont hot on the heels of a good victory against Welling in the FA cup. Despite some gloom around the stands before kick-off, The Oystermen started brightly. On 8 minutes, Wisker put Pullie through with a neat reverse pass and Pullie showed great composure by placing the ball beyond the keeper.

"Passion and Pride"
(even if The Times cut out the ball in the picture)
Rumour has it that Whyteleaf played in knickers and suspenders for the final game of the season. But they still played in green, so the omens were always going to be bad despite Whitstable's good finish to the season.

Prior to the game, Kevin Fewell, who must be a contender for player of the season for the second year in succession (along with Danny Tipple), was presented with an award for his 100th cap for Whit...

Cray v W_011.jpg

As I write this, somewhere in Switzerland they are turning on the particle accelerator that may create a black hole into which the whole world will be sucked as they recreate the first few milliseconds of the Big Bang. I ask myself therefore, is this the way I want to spend my last few hours on this Earth? Writing up a match report from last night's game; having driven to Cray and back, having watched yet another poor display of football. The short answer is 'yes' (obviously, I am doing it). ...

Gold at the end of the Rainbow

The return of Andy Constable to the Belmont in a blue shirt coincided with Town's first real "six-pointer" of the season.

(AC considers the new Whitstable partnership of Lawrence and Neal)

Chatham w
ere one place and a point above Whitstable before the game and their away form was remarkably similar to the Oystermen's home form - pretty unremarkable on both scores.

Whitstable 2 Leatherhead 1 - 13.10.07

Posted by Per Laleng on Thursday, October 8, 2009, In : Archived match report

(Seags appreciates Si's footballing brain)

In-form Leatherhead, placed 5th in the table before the game, visited a Whitstable team still finding its feet in the Ryman leage on Saturday. And with two strikers leaving the Oystermen during the week - AC after 7 years with the club moving to Tunbridge Wells and Stuart King accepting a more lucrative and career-enhancing offer from Ramsgate - the Oysterboys and girls were left wondering where the goals would come from. But the headline in The T...

Leatherhead 2 Whitstable 0 - 26.01.08

Posted by Per Laleng on Wednesday, October 7, 2009, In : Archived match report

The Relegation battle intensifies.

Whitstable don't play well against teams in green. Unfortunately, many of the teams in this league don that colour. Leatherhead, who sported a Bay-esque blue when they lost at The Belmont in 2007, were back in home colours on a terrible playing surface. Sporting a new-look away strip of red shirts and black shorts did not make much difference as Whitstable returned to their inconsistent worst despite starting reasonably brightly.

Ian Pulman attempts to...

Walton & Hersham 1 WTFC 0 - 15.11.08

Posted by Per Laleng on Monday, September 14, 2009, In : Archived match report

WaltHer v WTFC_059

In successive seasons, Whitstable have now left Walton & Hersham's ground feeling that they should have got something out of the game. Surely? The home side looked distinctly ordinary in the first half and their game was beset by internal strife and arguments. The classic line of the game came from the returning No.11 who, referring to the Oystermen, shouted at his team mates: "there are two of them everywhere!" One would have thought this was a good sign - something that the players in yello...

Brom v WTFC_100.JPG

I don’t think anyone saw that result coming, but there was an element of karma at work here: not only had the Bromley management and administration apparently treated our management and team with a certain degree of disdain and lack of respect (suggesting they would use the game as a training session), but I was also kept outside the ground for a good ten minutes as my “name wasn’t on the list”. In three years of following local football and taking photos for the local press, I...

Dover 1 WTFC 1 - 29.12.07

Posted by Per Laleng on Friday, September 11, 2009, In : Archived match report

Despite Chatham being the only team to have beaten Dover at home this season; and Whitstable being one of only 3 teams to have drawn with them, many (including me) had this encounter down as a likely thumping by top of the league Dover. Perhaps in part inspired by Hessenthaller's insistence on spelling his name "Mark" in the match-day programme, Marc Seager must have given his side a hell of a team-talk, because in front of a bumper crowd of 1116 (their 2nd largest crowd of the season), Whi...

(Jake Gess at right back crosses infront of the dugout)

Tuesday 6th November was a great night for football fans, especially supporters of Liverpool and Whitstable Town. Whilst history was being made at Anfield with the Red Men putting an historic 8 goals past Besiktas in the Champions League, the recently struggling Oystermen put on an impressive performance against Croydon Athletic - a team they had last met in the FA Cup qualifiers last season and beaten 1-0 at home. Cory celebrates Bagley's wonderstrike

Burgess Hill Town football club is situated in the middle of a large housing estate yet only attracted 137 fans on Tuesday night. Maybe it was the cold; maybe it was the fact that there were various Champions League games on telly. But it seems they rarely attract in excess of 200 spectators which is a shame because they play some good football. Their right winger in particular was not afraid to have a shot at every conceivable opportunity and this made fo...
