WTFC v Gills_160
The Gills captain with the krbs cup

What a difference the presence of the manager makes! Or maybe it's just that the Oystermen raise their game against better sides? In any case, after a pretty lacklustre performance against Herne Bay last week, Whitstable were on fire for most of the game against the Gills youth team - no mugs themselves. With Cornhill at right wing and Dolton at left, there was a good balance to the team that has been lacking in recent years. Dom Elmes partnered Vahid ...

Burgess Hill 0 WTFC 1 - 16.08.09

Posted by Per Laleng on Wednesday, December 2, 2009, In : Archived match report

It was a scorcher of a day at Burgess Hill, and the crowd of 300 plus particularly enjoyed the pre-game spectacle of the Town Crier announcing the game on the pitch. The Head to Head suggested this would be a close game despite Burgess Hill's decent pre-season record. Both teams started pretty brightly. Gary Sayer showed a willingness to drive forward from the left back position whilst at the same time having to mark the biggest No.7 I have ever seen in the shape of Cotton. He created a goo...

Marc Seager.
Thanks for the success you have brought the club

Perhaps unsurprisingly, this was a very scrappy game, especially the first half. Neither team had anything real to play for. Whitstable wanted to surpass their points-tally from last season. I can't quite work out where Godalming were last season, but if they were promoted, they had already done very well. Of course, as it turns out, the game itself was eventually overshadowed by the news that Marc Seager had resigned his posi...

In a game in which neither side had much to play for and after a gruelling Cup Final against Welling United on Thursday, a fairly low tempo opening was perhaps not that unexpected. Many who started against Welling also played on Saturday, and surprisingly played with an unexpected level of energy for which they should be commended.

WTFC v Welling_187

What a cracking game of football! Whitstable had not really expected to get this far in the competition and they should be credited for this acheievement: the first outing in this Final in their history. Although the score-line suggests a rout, as has been said elsewhere, that score-line may be a little deceiving because The Oystermen kept playing until the end - and had they put their chances away, this game could have looked more like a rugby score. The players were clearly disappointed ...

WTFC v Sitt_100

The game was far from being a spectacle. In fact, most of this performance was pretty poor. It was just as well that Sittingbourne seemed to have forgotten their shooting boots as well or else this could have been a very different story. It wasn't even a game of two halves: rather it was a game of 80 minutes rubbish followed by 10 minutes of some really attractive play by Whitstable - when they could almost have picked up an unlikely three points. But a point is not to be sniffed at, so...

I went to The Belmont on a one-man protest: by not taking my camera and deciding instead to make use of my season ticket from the stands. Maybe this is the way forward because Whitstable played really well for the first time this season. I gather some words were had after the Eastbourne game, and whatver was said seemed to have had the desired result!

There is very little to add to what has already been said about the game. In the first half, Whistable was in complete control against a team...

Somewhere between jimmygreaves, steveparsons and myself, there lies a jinx: I’m pretty sure none of us have witnessed many if any wins this season (come to think of it, I saw the win against Croydon towards the beginning of term). On the other hand, such talk is pure superstition and detracts from the real causes of yet another average performance (if only I had seen the apparent brilliance against Chipstead). Some of those causes have already been identified: some very odd selections, hurr...

But Whitstable's new strip (tight shorts apart) made them look more imposing on the pitch and for the first half hour or so, they also looked the more threatening. Tommy Martin is delighted with the second goal

This was a six pointer that Whitstable was in danger of throwing away. The first half display by the Oystermen was dire - the only saving grace being that it did not look like Chatham was going to score: Whitstable's back line was relatively solid despite the lack of control in midfield, and Chatham seemed to have left their finishing boots in the dressing room. But for the vast majority of the first half, Whitstable was pegged down in their...

Where is it all going wrong?

There was a strange sense of optimism before the game, but as has been noted elsewhere, it was short-lived. After Eastbourne scored their first, Whitstable disintegrated and this has to go down as the worst performance I have seen in some time: and that is saying something after some of the recent games! A Divided House?
(Not by the looks of things)

Not only did a large majority of the more vocal Oysterboys fail to turn up for this Boxing Day historical derby, but so too did some of Town's players. In fact, I'm not convinced I was wholly there either!

This was a game from
which Town could, and probably should have taken some points after their league cup clash earlier this season. Whitstable won that one 1-0 away, Steve Marshall bagging the only goal.

A dull afternoon at The Belmont

It's frustrating being a Whitstable fan at the moment - both on and off the pitch. It can only be hoped that non-football differences can play themselves out and find a resolution soon because it is becoming increasingly obvious that the absence of a united support can have a detrimental effect on the players. After the four-nil pasting by the excellent Tooting on Saturday, tonight's game should have been a comfortable win against bottom of the league Chipstead. A member of Tooting management had suggested to the Oysterboys that although Chipstead were a physical side, we should beat them even playing as poorly as we had against Tooting. This six-pointer did not go to plan - if indeed there was one.

In the first half, Whitstable were plain awful. No other word will do. There was not a single shot ...

The first game in the Ryman League for Whitstable Town in its 122 year history was always going to be an exciting occasion and the oystermen generally acquitted themselves well. They came out of the blocks, firing on all cylinders, and scored early from a set-piece. Veteran striker, Steve Marshall, held up the ball and set it up for captain Marcos Perona to fire a scorcher home from about 25 yards (left).

With the football season drawing to an unwelcomely swift conclusion I thought I would check out the most likely title challenger for next season by visiting Hayes Lane for this play-off final between Cray and Met. As both teams had progressed to the final via 1-0 wins, a similar score-line looked the most likely. And omens proved correct in a slightly nervy game between two physical and well-organised teams which was punctuated by some moments of brilliance.

Hello hello hello?

It was a beautiful day at the Met Police ground which, as steveparsons has already noted, is probably the best ground in our division. And for the first 5-6 minutes looked like we might cause an upset. Apart from a recent win in a cup, Met Police really had failed to flatter in recent games, and during the opening exchanges, they looked all over the place. Whitstable looked in control. Seags put himself on the bench, but clearly felt the cause was hopeless!

The Manager had called for a performance from the team that proved that they had moved on from the Kent League, especially after recent decent displays against tough opposition. Unfortunately, the team didn't really respond to that call. True, the Oystermen remain beset by injuries but more significantly, they were missing GS at right back and the skipper in the midfield through suspension. And boy were they missed!

Posted by Per Laleng on Monday, September 14, 2009, In : Archived match report
Walton & Hersham were relegated last season and had proved a tough opponent to crack at their place on 25 August. AC went off injured in that game and the long grass rendered Whitstable's passing game nugatory. Whitstable succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against a side that really looked nothing special. The return leg was a different affair as Whitstable welcomed their former striker, Jon Neal, back to The Belmont.

Walton & Hersham, who famously beat Brian Clough's Brighton 4-0 in an FA cup replay,...

Brom v WTFC_100.JPG

I don’t think anyone saw that result coming, but there was an element of karma at work here: not only had the Bromley management and administration apparently treated our management and team with a certain degree of disdain and lack of respect (suggesting they would use the game as a training session), but I was also kept outside the ground for a good ten minutes as my “name wasn’t on the list”. In three years of following local football and taking photos for the local press, I...

Dover 1 WTFC 1 - 29.12.07

Posted by Per Laleng on Friday, September 11, 2009, In : Archived match report

Despite Chatham being the only team to have beaten Dover at home this season; and Whitstable being one of only 3 teams to have drawn with them, many (including me) had this encounter down as a likely thumping by top of the league Dover. Perhaps in part inspired by Hessenthaller's insistence on spelling his name "Mark" in the match-day programme, Marc Seager must have given his side a hell of a team-talk, because in front of a bumper crowd of 1116 (their 2nd largest crowd of the season), Whi...

Dartford 3 WTFC 0 - League Cup 3rd Round 4.12.07

Posted by Per Laleng on Friday, September 11, 2009, In : Archived match report
I don't normally write up cup game, but because of the current problems with the forum, I thought I would say a few words about last night's game at Princes Park.

This was going to be a difficult game. I predicted a 3-0 loss and changed my mind at the last minute to a 1-0 win! Dartford are top of the Ryman North division and won 6-1 on Saturday. But they fielded a largely under 21 side which should have made the ask easier. However, there were no signs in the Whitstable side of Liam Quin...

Pullie collected an award for his hatrick earlier in February

A game between these two sides usually produces a goal-fest. This one didn't, and it was no classic spectacle. But I disagree with comments suggesting that it was boring. And a point and a clean sheet are not to be balked at even if this was a game from which three points could have been bagged. Having said that it wasn't that boring, it's equally true to say that it wasn't exactly peppered with incidents. And given that the game ...

Dulwich%20v%20W_031
This was never going to be an easy game, but last season this game away at Dulwich Hamlet proved to be the turning point as Whitstable took all three points after a fantastic 3-2 victory against a team flying high in the league. Tommy Martin's free kick was the pick of the bunch in that game. On a blisteringly cold night at Dulwich with sheets of sleet hammering at the players, many fans decided to take advantage of the warmth of the fantastic bar. But a hard core of travelling Oysterboys, w...

Dulwich Hamlet 2 WTFC 3 - 23.02.08

Posted by Per Laleng on Wednesday, September 2, 2009, In : Archived match report

Whitstable travelled to Dulwich Hamlet on Saturday - a nice stadium built courtesy of Sainsbury's. Despite challenging for the play-off places, Dulwich had lost their influential captain to Kingstonian the day before this game and their recent results had been somewhat erratic. That said, they had recorded an impressive 2-0 victory against the Oystermen when the teams met at The Belmont on 10 November. Their pace had proved to be Whitstable's undoing on that occasion. In front of a respecta...

(Shape, where is your shape?)

The last time Whitstable started a game with a pre-match group huddle was in the Kent Senior Trophy final against Bearsted last season. This season, that gesture of togetherness has been distinctly lacking. Other teams in the Ryman who start this way, tend to do well against the Oystermen. Not always, but generally. Perhaps it signifies a team spirit and understanding currently eluding Town? Of the two teams on the pitch yesterday, Dulwich certainly played with...

(The Ashford captain celebrates their third)

By most accounts, Whitstable had given bottom of the league Molesey a lacklustre game on Saturday. The 1-1 score-line tells only half the story. One Ashford fan who had scouted Whitstable in that game commented on their forum that Molesey should have won 4-1! Such observations should worry Whitstable whose recent unbeaten form is only partly explicable by good displays of attacking football. The high-water mark was arguably reached against Leath...

Liam Quinn is congratulated by his team mates on a well-taken header

Contrary to my earlier predictions where I suggested that Leatherhead were too far away to be caught, Whitstable went into this game zooming past Leatherhead and catching up with their fellow promotees Chipstead. Seager changed his formation for this encounter, with three centre backs, two wing backs, and Bagley partnering Cory upfront. The whispers were that Pulman was late turning up and that's why he found himself on the b...

(Jake Gess at right back crosses infront of the dugout)

Tuesday 6th November was a great night for football fans, especially supporters of Liverpool and Whitstable Town. Whilst history was being made at Anfield with the Red Men putting an historic 8 goals past Besiktas in the Champions League, the recently struggling Oystermen put on an impressive performance against Croydon Athletic - a team they had last met in the FA Cup qualifiers last season and beaten 1-0 at home. The results warmed ...

Cory celebrates Bagley's wonderstrike

Burgess Hill Town football club is situated in the middle of a large housing estate yet only attracted 137 fans on Tuesday night. Maybe it was the cold; maybe it was the fact that there were various Champions League games on telly. But it seems they rarely attract in excess of 200 spectators which is a shame because they play some good football. Their right winger in particular was not afraid to have a shot at every conceivable opportunity and this made fo...

MHam v W_015

I wasn’t sure whether to go to this game after recent performances, but I am glad I did even if Liverpool's success against United had put me in a good mood (and even if I sat in the car listening to the game not knowing that SKY was showing in the club house!). This was a much better outing from the Oystermen. It may sound like a cliché, but this was a game of two halves and in the second, there really was only one team in it, and that was Whitstable.

Seags lined up with a 4-4-2 forma...

Merstham v WTFC_020

Absolutely atrocious conditions and I think I'm right in saying that most of us were a little surprised the game was not called off at some point. But fair play to the referee who let it continue despite the puddles. It was bad enough walking from one end to the other, so credit to the players who stuck to the task in hand.

WTFC 3 Croydon Athletic 2 - 19.08.08

Posted by Per Laleng on Thursday, August 20, 2009, In : Archived match report

Croydon Athletic turned up not only in a very nice coach, but also with a couple of potentially tasty players in their team: Mark De Bolla (ex Ebbsfleet) and Simon Osborn (ex Palace).  Osborn displayed his qualities throughout until cramp set in late on and scored an excellent individual effort 18 minutes into the game. He had already made his mark three minutes earlier with a beautiful cross-field pass to Clayton whose shot was parried by Fewell. The goal came shortly after Liam Quinn (of...

Ashford v W_006

If Saturday’s performance against Burgess Hill was the worst in recent history then today’s game could surely not have been far behind? Oysterman of the match by a long way was Kevin Fewell. And if the keeper, who let in four, was by far the best player on the pitch, it really says very little for the rest of the team. That said, both veteran Whitstable players Tom Parker and Rob Thomas did pretty well amongst some other very ordinary performances.

There was a debate about whether the te...
