With both the inspirational team captain and the impressive youngster, Cornhill, suspended, Seags was forced into making changes for this important 'six pointer'. Some of those changes raised the odd eye-brow before the game: Marcos Perona was pushed to right-back, Gooding found himself in the berth vacated by Quinn and Tom Parker got the captain's armband for the day.

CorC v W_010s.JPG

It's funny how a good performance from the lads can alter your mood! The journey to Corinthian Casuals on a Tuesday night was marked by some trepidation for this 6 pointer against a team that got a good result against Met Police. But from the off the Oysterboys were in full song probably helped by the welcome return of the Choirmaster and Elwood. The Oystermen responded to the song and seemed especially inspired by "Let's pretend we've scored a goal" after a couple of chances went astray from...

Steve Marshall and Ian Pulman

General Seager started his relegation battle with new signinDave Cory joining his former Ramsgate strike partner, Ian Pulman, up front. WitSam Denly out with an injury and Tommy Martin having won his place back anyway after his outstanding performance against Chipstead last week, the midfield looked much more balanced: Jake Gess and Tom Parker out wide and Marcos Perona shoring up the middle with Martin.

Corinthian-Casuals 3 WTFC 3 - 16.10.07

Posted by Per Laleng on Wednesday, October 28, 2009, In : Archived match report

On paper and recent form, this looked set to be an even game with both teams on equal points before the game. But Corinthian-Causals had the disadvantage of having failed to win at home so far this season. On the back of two wins and a great game of attacking football last Saturday, Whitstable's confidence should have been sky-high. And for the first 10 minutes or so it was pretty much all one way traffic in the direction of the home side's goal with John Akinde causing all sorts of proble...

Whyteleafe 0 WTFC 0 - 14.02.09

Posted by Per Laleng on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, In : Archived match report

The game kicked off 18 minutes late because one of the linesmen was late. This was an unwelcome start to proceedings because it was bloody cold out there. But at least the game went on – there being some doubt about that until the referee gave the go-ahead shortly before kick-off.

As has been noted elsewhere, this really was a game of two-halves. The first belonged to the Oystermen whereas the second was just about Whyteleafe’s. The end result was a fair one.

W v Worth_072

Despite the freezing conditions, or perhaps because of them, this was on the whole a good game of football. The impartial observer would also probably agree that Whitstable were unlucky not to get anything out of the game after Worthing scored from the spot in the dying minutes of injury time. But had Jake Gess scored from the spot in the 10th minute on his 100th appearance for the club, the final result may have gone the other way completely. It has been suggested elsewhere that the penalt...

W v Whyte_045.JPG

Whether by accident or design, Rob Thomas was the only change to this Whitstable  side which ultimately out-played a fancied Whyteleafe side visiting The Belmont hot on the heels of a good victory against Welling in the FA cup. Despite some gloom around the stands before kick-off, The Oystermen started brightly. On 8 minutes, Wisker put Pullie through with a neat reverse pass and Pullie showed great composure by placing the ball beyond the keeper.

"Passion and Pride"
(even if The Times cut out the ball in the picture)
Rumour has it that Whyteleaf played in knickers and suspenders for the final game of the season. But they still played in green, so the omens were always going to be bad despite Whitstable's good finish to the season.

Prior to the game, Kevin Fewell, who must be a contender for player of the season for the second year in succession (along with Danny Tipple), was presented with an award for his 100th cap for Whit...

You Reds!
By most accounts, Whitstable acquitted themselves very well against promotion contenders Tooting & Mitcham United last weekend despite the unflattering 3-1 loss. Saturday's game against Worthing was a different proposition altogether as an unsettled Worthing side paid it's first visit to The Belmont for a while...

Kingst v WTFC_041

The Kingstonian forum was a abuzz prior to kick-off predicting a mauling of The Oystermen, and the omens did not look good after Whitstable gave away the ball with the first kick of the game. That allowed high-flying Kingstonian to launch a swift attack forcing Kevin Fewell to make a fingertip save within 30 seconds of the start. Fortunately, the shock seemed to remind the Red Men (playing in yellow) that the game had started and they quickly composed themselves.

I should have statyed on honeymoon cos this game certainy wasn't one! Cray scored a very good goal within a couple of minutes from way out as an attempted clearance landed on the boot of Kinch who shot from outside the area into the bottom corner. There was nothing Fewell could have done about it, but the ball should have been cleared in the first place.

W v Crow_059.JPG

The Oystermen put in a good shift against Brackley Town last Saturday in the FA Trophy. Having taken the lead early in the first half, they gave a team of well-paid players a good game until Brackley took the lead with a soft goal some twenty minutes from the end. At that stage, it was obvious (and understandably so) that no-one really had the appetite for a replay somewhere near Northampton. But at least Whitstable had started scoring goals and they played some excellent counter-attacking fo...

Kingstonian 3 WTFC 0 - 08.03.08

A miserable day on a number of counts, but predominantly due to the weather and the score. Whitstable have had a reputation for playing good football in the rain, but perhaps it did not rain hard enough to motivate the players? Whatever the explanation, most of them weren't at the races (or maybe they were at the races but should have been at the game!)

Cray Wanderers visited The Belmont with an unbeaten 20 match run under their belt. Lying very comfortably in third place before the game and having beaten Whitstable three times already this term, it was going to be a big ask to get anything out of the game. But oozing confidence after their excellent performance against Dulwich Hamlet last weekend, here was a Whitstable side that was not going to take it lying down.

WTFC 2 Kingstonian 3 - 24.11.07

Kingstonian’s visit to the Belmont was always going to be a stern test for Whitstable irrespective of their stuttering recent form. Two 3-1 losseson the bounce, and facing an established Ryman side lying third in the table, a team that doesn’t seem to lose away, who score twice as many as they give away the signs for Whitstable were inauspicious. Their cause was hardly helped by the recall of Big John Akinde by Ebbsfleet United just before the game. But as one chapter ends another begins:...

WTFC 2 Dover Athletic 2 - 25.08.07

Posted by Per Laleng on Saturday, October 17, 2009, In : Archived match report

Hessenthaler's Dover travelled to lowly Whitstable with a 100% record. Perhaps because they are favourites to win the league, Dover seemed to approach the game with a degree of complacency. Did they expect a walkover? If so, Whitstable had other ideas making the favourites seem distinctly average. Josh Maine (below left) and Steven Lloyd (below right) at centre back were mountains who stood in the way of a fairly sustained, but ultimately weak, attack.

I lost count of the number of shots which...

As I write this, somewhere in Switzerland they are turning on the particle accelerator that may create a black hole into which the whole world will be sucked as they recreate the first few milliseconds of the Big Bang. I ask myself therefore, is this the way I want to spend my last few hours on this Earth? Writing up a match report from last night's game; having driven to Cray and back, having watched yet another poor display of football. The short answer is 'yes' (obviously, I am doing it). ...

W v Fleet_048

Andy Sinton’s Fleet inflicted further misery on The Oystermen’s poor start to the season cruising to a deserved victory at The Belmont. A marginally better organised Fleet camped in the hosts’ half in a scrappy opening which also saw Campbell (filling in at left back) putting in some crunching tackles which more often than not led to the concession of free-kicks. A mere 7 minutes into the game and Fleet's James Field crossed dangerously from the right for Hemmings to header onto the po...

Tommy Martin is delighted with the second goal

This was a six pointer that Whitstable was in danger of throwing away. The first half display by the Oystermen was dire - the only saving grace being that it did not look like Chatham was going to score: Whitstable's back line was relatively solid despite the lack of control in midfield, and Chatham seemed to have left their finishing boots in the dressing room. But for the vast majority of the first half, Whitstable was pegged down in their own h...

(Seags appreciates Si's footballing brain)

In-form Leatherhead, placed 5th in the table before the game, visited a Whitstable team still finding its feet in the Ryman leage on Saturday. And with two strikers leaving the Oystermen during the week - AC after 7 years with the club moving to Tunbridge Wells and Stuart King accepting a more lucrative and career-enhancing offer from Ramsgate - the Oysterboys and girls were left wondering where the goals would come from. Leatherhead 2 Whitstable 0 - 26.01.08

Posted by Per Laleng on Wednesday, October 7, 2009, In : Archived match report

The Relegation battle intensifies.

Whitstable don't play well against teams in green. Unfortunately, many of the teams in this league don that colour. Leatherhead, who sported a Bay-esque blue when they lost at The Belmont in 2007, were back in home colours on a terrible playing surface. Sporting a new-look away strip of red shirts and black shorts did not make much difference as Whitstable returned to their inconsistent worst despite starting reasonably brightly.

Leather v WTFC_057.JPG

Pre-match, there was some talk on the terraces about whether Tom Parker was cutting the mustard in the middle of the park and the consensus seemed to be a lack of consistency and goals on his part. He must have overheard the conversation as he not only played well but also scored his first goal of the season, and for as long as I remember. It is also obvious why the manager likes him, because his voice is always heard on the pitch, irrespective of how well he is playing.

But things did...
